by H. 힐링 매거진 2026. 1. 9.

Why do humans try to find meaning and pattern in accidental events? : Human psychology to find order in randomness

Is there really a reason for everything?
People often say, "No coincidence." When we experience unexpected encounters, repeated numbers, and a series of similar events, we naturally try to find some meaning in them. Despite what may be a mere coincidence, we often link the event to our own situation, emotions, and signals of the future. This tendency is not just a problem for people with certain dispositions, but a universal psychological phenomenon that almost everyone experiences repeatedly in their daily lives. Psychology describes humans as beings that essentially recognize patterns and try to give them meaning. This is a cognitive strategy to make the world understandable and predictable, but at the same time, it also poses a risk of leading to false beliefs or distorted judgment. Why do humans try to find meaning in such coincidences? Understanding this question clearly reveals how automatic and emotion-driven our way of thinking is.

1. the human brain designed to find patterns
The human brain is not accustomed to embracing disorder as it is. From an evolutionary point of view, the ability to quickly recognize patterns was an important function directly related to survival. The chances of survival would have been significantly reduced if repeated sounds or traces from forests had not been linked to threats. For this reason, the human brain is designed to create as meaningful a connection as possible, even if it is a pattern that does not exist. The problem is that this function remains the same in modern society. Even in stock charts, relationships, and small daily events, we try to find rules and causes. This pattern recognition is sometimes useful, but it can lead to errors in creating causal relationships even in statistically random events. However, the human brain is much more comfortable with the interpretation of "something for a reason" than the conclusion that "it means nothing."

2. Finding meaning reduces anxiety
Another important reason to find meaning in coincidences is to reduce anxiety. Unpredictable situations cause strong anxiety and stress in humans. On the other hand, when an event is given a reason and meaning, the situation is perceived as controllable. Even if the meaning is different from the truth, just feeling "knowing the reason" increases a lot of psychological stability. So, rather than accepting failure as a simple coincidence, people try to connect them with personality, luck, and intentions of others. This giving of meaning helps to organize feelings, but at the same time brings with it the possibility of distorting reality. People try to find the cause stronger, especially in negative events, and in the process, they may excessively blame themselves or others.

3. psychology to restore a sense of control
The act of finding meaning in coincidence can be seen as an attempt to restore a sense of control. Humans become psychologically stable when they feel that they have some control over the world. However, coincidences destroy that sense of control. So people try to get a sense of control again by giving rules and intentions to random outcomes. These can also be seen as superstitions, jinxes, and repetitive behaviors. The belief that "doing this will change the outcome" provides individuals with psychological stability and confidence, even if it does not actually affect the outcome. This phenomenon may seem irrational, but it is a very natural response given the human emotional system.

4. the effect of the habit of finding meaning on judgment
The problem is that these habits of meaning can constantly distort our judgment. We often draw convincing conclusions with only limited information and selectively accept only the information that supports them. This creates a structure where false beliefs are reinforced. The ability to find meaning itself is essential to humans, but it is important to recognize that it is not always accurate. Attitudes to distinguish between coincidence and causation are important starting points for moving toward more rational judgment. The moment we realize that we are creating meaning, our thinking flexibility can become much greater.

So why do we want to share this meaning with others?

Why is the meaning that was just a personal interpretation, at some point, the belief of the group?

Why do people try to check other people's reactions to be sure they're right?

And how is the phenomenon of following the majority of choices and opinions in the process, that is, social alignment strengthened again?

5. The moment you share meaning, the individual's faith is convinced by the group
The meaning created in coincidence is not just in the individual's mind, but is often reinforced through conversations with others. People tend to check other people's reactions to relieve anxiety that the meaning they feel may be nothing more than a subjective interpretation. At this time, when a similar interpretation or empathy is obtained, the meaning is elevated to a 'reasonable explanation' beyond a simple personal feeling. On the contrary, the more people around us who interpret the same experience similarly, the more we accept it as an inevitable, not an accident. This process is the basis for the rapid spread of certain beliefs or interpretations within a group. In the end, it can be said that humans are beings who add confidence to meaning by sharing and confirming it with others rather than creating meaning alone. At this point, individual cognitive bias extends to social phenomena, and the foundation for the majority of opinions to feel like 'right' is formed.

Next time, let's talk about why certainty is easy and doesn't change so well (confirmation bias)!
