by H. 힐링 매거진 2026. 1. 12.

Why do we get used to happiness: the psychology of pleasure adaptation

Why won't the emotions that I've been looking forward to for a long time

People definitely feel strong emotions when they adapt to a new environment, achieve long-cherished goals, or experience big changes. At first, even small changes are largely recognized, and sometimes the experience seems to light up an entire daily life. However, over time, those feelings gradually die down, and you find yourself back in a state that is not much different from before. Many people feel that they have become dull or blame themselves for lack of appreciation over this process. However, psychology describes these changes as very natural phenomena. This is because human emotions are designed to adapt to experiences, rather than remain stationary. This process of controlling emotions is called **Hedonic Adaptation**, which is a key concept to understand why the happiness and satisfaction we feel are having difficulty lasting beyond a certain level.

1. Emotions move in the direction of maintaining balance

The human emotional system adjusts itself to prevent extreme conditions from lasting long. This is why both strong joy and deep sadness ease the intensity of emotions over time. This is not because the emotion has weakened, but it can be seen as a psychological balance device necessary to maintain daily life. If emotions always stay at their highest or lowest points, it will be difficult for us to continue our normal judgment or life. Pleasure adaptation is a natural recovery process in which emotions get used to certain experiences, and return to a stable baseline.

2. Repeated experiences lower emotional stimulation

Experiences that initially felt special are gradually recognized as predictable events when repeated. At this time, it is determined that emotions no longer need to react strongly and the intensity of the stimulus is lowered. People often think that satisfaction has declined if they do not feel the same emotions in the same experience as before, but in reality, the emotional system has already classified the experience as 'daily'. This process explains why we want stronger stimuli or greater changes, and why satisfaction is not easily maintained.

3. Changes in expectations shift the emotional baseline

As pleasure adaptation progresses, people's expectations also change. Conditions that were satisfactory in the past are recognized as basic conditions over time, and the baseline of emotions naturally rises. As a result, even though the current state is better than before, satisfaction may feel rather reduced. Without being aware of these changes, people expect that only better situations will fill their emotions again. However, as long as the baseline continues to move, satisfaction always remains temporary.

4. Adaptation works even with negative experiences

Adapting to pleasure is not just about positive emotions. Negative experiences such as failure, loss, and frustration also tend to gradually decrease over time. Of course, not all experiences recover equally, but many people return to their daily lives better than they expected. This is not because human emotions ignore pain, but because they regulate them to make life sustainable. This ability to adapt is an important psychological resource that helps us find balance again after difficult experiences.

5. Emotions don't disappear, they move to the background

When you feel that your emotions have faded through pleasure adaptation, you often retreat from the center of your perception rather than disappearing. At first, the emotion that was clearly conscious at first becomes the background over time, and new experiences and stimuli fill the place. People evaluate the present based on their past emotional state and sometimes feel unsatisfied. However, emotions are not objects to be held, but are closer to the process of changing in the flow. The more you understand these characteristics, the more you expect and evaluate your emotions.

So why do we keep moving in search of greater happiness?

Why do people want stronger stimuli and better conditions, even though they already have enough experience? Perhaps it is because of the current state in which they have adapted? Then why do people perceive this adaptation and yet repeat similar choices?

Next time, I think it'll be fun to talk about whether happiness is a condition or interpretation. See you next time!
